Two high value learning models

'Two really high value, practical learning models'

The Dreyfus and Dreyfus five stage skills acquisition model                       John Cowan's three forms of reflection model

A free zoom networking hour, Tuesday 21st November 2023

Starting at: 16.00 UK   11.OO EST

An overview

Learning practitioners, typically have a few favourite learning models.

Here are two I use regularly and that bring powerful results: The Dreyfus and Dreyfus five stages of development model, and John Cowan's three forms of reflection.

I will co-host this event with Jacky Leonard.

Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus suggest that professional development has five distinct stages as we become more expert.

John Cowan notes how reflection on learning need not be only retrospective, that it works best when looking forward, in anticipation, and can be strong when 'in the moment'.

After the event you will will be sent a lot of additional resources

You will be sent all the items below to add

     value to your participation.

A video summarised

My video 'Using the three forms of reflection'

    summarised with timings.

Key points captured in easily accessible format.

Both these very practical models have generated a lot of publications exploring their application.

I have listed samples for each and will send them after this event.

Here are four on the 'three reflections' model.

"On becoming an innovative university teacher".

    John Cowan 2006.

"Fostering an action-reflection dynamic amongst student practitioners".

Helen Francis and John Cowan 2008.

"The learner's role in assessing higher level abilities".

Diane Cherry and John Cowan 2012.

"Facilitating reflective journaling - personal reflections on three decades of practice".

    John Cowan 2013.

Here are just three publications on the 'Dreyfus and Dreyfus' model.

The first listed is the original published source.

A cursory search will show the many publications the model has prompted citing application across a wide range of occupations.

"A five stage model of the mental activities involved in directed skill acquisition".

    Stuart and Hubert Dreyfus 1980.

"From novice to expert"

    Patricia Benner 1982.

"Beyond Expertise: Some preliminary thoughts on mastery".
